One of Asheville’s most renowned landmark buildings, The BB&T building located at 1 West Pack Square in downtown Asheville, formerly known as the Northwestern Bank Building was built in 1964. Owner and Builder George S. Goodyear, president of the Goodyear Mortgage Corp., held the groundbreaking for this historical building in 1963. With the help of Architect D. Gene Whittington, AIA, and Design Associate, Charles L. Bates along with many contractors and engineers the construction was complete and the building opened in September 1965.
Towering 220 ft or 18 stories over Pack Square, the building is known for being the tallest in Western North Carolina and the location of prime office space. The 1960’s, structure included advanced heating and cooling, plumbing systems and other state of the art amenities.
In 1979 the name of the building changed from the Northwestern Bank Building to Northwestern Plaza. In 1988 the building was purchased by a group of local business people and was renamed the BB&T (Branch Banking and Trust) Building.
Today the BB&T Building continues to be Asheville’s most prestigious corporate address located in the center of downtown. The building hosts the BB&T regional offices for the Western North Carolina geographical area along with many renowned businesses, law firms, travel agency, an investment firm and independent consultants. The building also hosts centralized data facilities, telecommunications utilities, cellular utilities, broadband interest utilities, specialized utilities for Progress Energy and AT&T.
Today the BB&T Building strives to be environmentally aware of our natural resources and continues to practice and grow in earth friendly habits. |
